Rwanda is preparing to implement a digital system for the national registration and management of livestock, aiming to improve animal health, boost productivity, and enhance data management within the sector.
Led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, this project will utilize the AMIS/iHaze platform to register and track livestock across the country. Officials state that the system will facilitate livestock traceability, improve the delivery of veterinary services, and provide reliable data to support decision-making.
As part of the preparations for implementing this initiative, District Animal Resource Officers and Veterinary Sanitary Mandate (VSM) agencies are undergoing practical training at the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board headquarters in Rubona, Southern Province. The training aims to equip them with the practical skills needed to use the system for registering and managing livestock data.
Officials note that the system will enable accurate livestock identification, movement tracking, and health monitoring. This will help farmers increase productivity and access veterinary services more easily and quickly. This initiative aligns with the broader strategy to modernize Rwanda’s livestock sector through the use of technology and effective data management. It also reinforces the “One Health” approach integrating animal, human, and environmental health to combat diseases and improve public health.
The project is being implemented with the support of the Government of Rwanda in partnership with organizations such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development andAFR Rwanda.
A nationwide livestock registration drive is also planned, bringing together farmers and other stakeholders as Rwanda continues to develop a well-managed livestock sector underpinned by reliable data.
