Yesterday, on July 28, 2025, marked the official opening of the 9th Africa Animal Welfare Conference is currently underway in Yaoundé, Cameroon, under the theme Strengthening Actions for Animal Welfare and Environment for a Sustainable Future and Resilient Planet.”
This high-level event brings together delegates and stakeholders from across the continent and beyond. It is jointly organised by the Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the African Union – InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), in collaboration with the Government of Cameroon.
This conference’s official opening ceremony graced by Hon. Dr Taiga, Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Cameroon.
In her remarks, Huyam Salih, Director of AU-IBAR, applauded the Government of Cameroon for hosting this significant gathering. She also recognized the strong partnership between Africa Network for Animal Welfare and UNEP in advancing the animal welfare agenda.
Salih reaffirmed AU-IBAR’s unwavering commitment to promoting animal welfare across the continent, emphasizing its vital role in sustainable development, public health, biodiversity, and food security. As the AU institution mandated to lead on animal resources, AU-IBAR will continue supporting member states to strengthen policies, build capacity, and foster partnerships for a humane and resilient Africa.
