Members of the "TWITEZIMBERE KABARI" youth group in Jomba Sector proudly display their first major passion fruit harvest from a two-hectare orchard established through APEFA and GAIN support. The 856 kg harvest generated RWF 1,030,000.

JOMBA, Nyabihu, The group of youth called TWITEZIMBERE KABARI from Jomba Sector located in Gasiza Cell of the Nyabihu District has successfully conducted its first harvest of passion fruit from a two-hectare farm made possible through the initiatives by Action pour la Protection de l'Environnement et la Promotion des Filières Agricoles (APEFA).

The scheme in which APEFA participated is dubbed "Five Fruits Per Household and Youth-run Orchards Across Five Districts of Western Rwanda, Rooted for Health for a Greener Tomorrow". The project was financed by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Youth farmers carefully sorting freshly harvested passion fruits into green crates in Nyabihu District, ensuring only the best produce makes it to market and local households.

The input from the project included the provision of 1,754 seedlings of fruit including 1,214 passion fruit seedlings and 540 avocado seedlings.

The first harvest from the tree yielded 856 kg of crops yielding an income of RWF 1,030,000 according to the data released by APEFA about the harvest.

Part of the product is consumed by families of the members of the group boosting the availability of the fruits at the household level. During the harvesting activity the group expects to collect fruits from the fields in the coming seasons.

The achievement has thus been fueled through the monitoring of the crop production process that took place on a regular basis as well as interpretation of guidelines.

Members of the youth group packaging the passion fruit harvest into sacks, marking a major milestone in economic empowerment and agricultural productivity in Western Rwanda.

Another goal of this initiative is to enhance nutrition levels at home, prevent obesity and malnutrition and promote involvement of youth in agriculture and availability of income opportunities, as well as sustainable land use and conservation of natural habitat.

TWITEZIMBERE KABARI has gained experience in a variety of areas ranging from seedling reception to orchard establishment and onwards to first harvest.

While the group is currently in the harvesting stage, it is already looking ahead to future land production and income.
