Rwanda has officially opened the 6th World Congress on Agroforestry (WCA 2025), taking place from 20 to 24 October 2025 in Kigali. The five-day global gathering brings together more than 700 participants from across the world to explore how tree-based solutions can drive sustainable development, climate resilience, and inclusive growth.

Held under the theme “Agroforestry for People, Planet and Profit,” the Congress gathers researchers, farmers, policymakers, private sector leaders, civil society, and youth to share experiences and innovations that support resilient agro-ecosystems.

According to Rwanda’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye, hosting WCA 2025 provides an opportunity for the country to showcase how agroforestry can transform landscapes, boost community incomes, and strengthen climate resilience.

“Agroforestry is a pathway to sustainable development, protecting ecosystems while creating opportunities for communities to thrive. This Congress allows Rwanda to share its experiences and learn from global partners, turning knowledge into practical action for people and the planet,” said Dr. Arakwiye.

The five-day event aims to:

  • Promote agroforestry as a key solution for climate resilience, food security, and biodiversity conservation;
  • Advance research and evidence-based practices that enhance agroforestry systems; and
  • Inspire actionable strategies to integrate agroforestry into national and global development agendas.

The WCA 2025, organized in partnership with the Rwanda Ministry of Environment, the World Agroforestry (ICRAF), and development partners, reaffirms Rwanda’s leadership in championing sustainable land use and green growth.
