Yesterday, on 16 September 2025, Rwanda celebrated the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the environment, improving air quality, and safeguarding public health for the future. The event took place at ACES-Centre for Excellence for Sustainable Cooling in Rubirizi, bringing together stakeholders to advance action for cleaner air and a protected ozone layer.
In her welcome remarks, Juliet Kabera, Director General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority, highlighted Rwanda’s leadership in advancing clean air policies and phasing out ozone-depleting substances. "We marked this week with factory inspections, media campaigns, and the Race for Clean Air at Nyandungu Eco-Park. These efforts show how environment protection connects to clean air, healthier communities, and climate action."
She added “Rwanda is committed to building on this legacy by strengthening national systems, investing in green technologies, and working closely with partners through initiatives like ACES-Centre for Excellence for Sustainable Cooling.” “Thank all our partners for their continued support. I also extend my appreciation to all stakeholders represented here today for your dedication to this important work.”
Honorable Minister Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye emphasized the global significance of the celebration“This anniversary is a moment of pride for all. Few agreements have achieved as much as the Vienna Convention, the Montreal Protocol, and the Kigali Amendment: they have united the world in science-based action and delivered measurable results.”
He further noted "We are proud to host ACES-Centre for Excellence for Sustainable Cooling., which is serving Rwanda and supporting knowledge exchange and training across Africa. It is a strong symbol of Rwanda’s role in advancing solutions for ozone protection, energy efficiency, food security & climate resilience." Rwanda is investing to improve air quality. We launched an enhanced, state-of-the-art Vehicle Emission Inspection Programme that uses advanced technology to identify highly polluting vehicles while guiding drivers towards cleaner practices."
Rwanda continues to prioritize clean air and pollution control, safeguarding public health and promoting sustainable development for a better environmental future.
